Hi, all! It’s Gia here, founder and owner of eLuxurie.
We know that furs are totally captivating. From their soft plushness to the touch of exquisite elegance that they lend any outfit, furs are garments like no other. But, we also know that it’s not all about appearances. Those of us with a real love of fur know that it’s a topic that needs our heads to be switched on, too.
So, let’s get an important point straight: eLuxurie supports wearing ethically sourced, sustainable furs that come exclusively from fur farms with industry-approved practices.
My passion for fur extends right back to my teenage years. At first, it was solely inspired by the tantalizing images of models swathed in gorgeous furs that I’d see in magazines. Then, as I became an adult, I took a more serious interest in the subject.
I developed a real feel for the global fashion scene and started to research different fur types, the techniques behind the creation of such fabulous pieces and the history of fur in fashion. I’ve since been taught by professional furriers, meaning I’m perfectly placed to offer all my boutique and consignment clients the advice they need about all things fur.
I’ll admit it: fur is my vice. But, it’s one that I’ve put a whole lot of thought in to over the years. Now, I’d love my eLuxurie clients to be able to do the same.
So, without further ado, let’s get into the reasons why fur’s one of the most intelligent additions you can make to your wardrobe.
It’s buzzword time: fur’s a champion of sustainability
The drive for sustainability is everywhere, from how we get around to what we choose to eat every day. But, have you ever stopped to think about how you could make your wardrobe more sustainable?
Totally honestly, nakedness is the number one sustainable option. But, given that’s pretty frowned upon in most circles, let’s talk fur. Real furs are a renewable, totally biodegradable natural material. Providing that the furs are responsibly sourced and farmed, they’re a truly sustainable fashion choice.
By contrast, faux furs are usually made from synthetic polymeric fibers: non-renewable, man-made materials. The chemicals used to produce fake fur damage and pollute the natural environment on a significant scale.
It takes a whole gallon of petroleum to manufacture just three synthetic fur jackets, which will then take around 1000 years to break down in landfill. To put that into perspective, real furs naturally biodegrade in just six to twelve months.
Your natural furs are with you for the long haul
Given the proper love and care, your fur coat could last you 25 years or more. There’s simply no way that a synthetic alternative will give you that dependable wear and warmth – and not to mention style – for that length of time.
While synthetic options quickly become threadbare and faded, natural furs are tanned to preserve their good-as-new condition over the years.
If you’re looking for longevity, expertly crafted fur garments are the smart option. Not only does that make real furs more environmentally friendly – the less we waste, the less goes to landfill – but they’re a wallet-friendly option, too.
Sure, it’ll be an upfront investment in high quality, but it’ll pay for itself over and over again. Plus, if your treasured furs do get a little worn and torn, a quick repair job will likely get them back in fabulous shape.
Recyclable materials are the future
Reduce, re-use, recycle… your natural furs. We know that one quality fur will last us decades, but what if it’s time to change things up a little? There’s no need to splash out on new natural furs; instead, it’s time to get those creative energies flowing.
Real fur garments can be completely remodeled into an inspired new creation. As fashion evolves over the seasons, you might want to restyle your coat or give it a new trim, depending on how you’re feeling.
Natural fur coats can even be recycled into eye-catching purses or elegant pillows to add a lick of luxury to your home’s interior décor. The possibilities are endless.
Biodegradable is the new black
We’re done with man-made materials that pollute our planet for eons after they’re manufactured. Genuine fur is completely natural matter, meaning that – once it’s finally reached the end of its long and luxurious life – it will organically break down. You can even use worn-out furs in your garden compost, no word of a lie.
However, fake fur is man-made and not biodegradable. As most synthetics are manufactured using petrochemicals, they won't break down efficiently, sitting in landfill sites for years on end. So, please do keep that in mind and make your fashion choices wisely.
As always, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or requests!
Ciao for now,
Gia xoxo
